Perimenopause: Everything you Need to Know about the First Stage of Menopause

Perimenopause: Everything you Need to Know about the First Stage of Menopause

How do I know I'm going through perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the first stage of menopause, which women go through starting from around 43 years old and can last for about 4 to 8 years. Many women are actually not aware that there are multiple stages to menopause and perimenopause is often the most difficult stage physically as the female body goes through the most change - and it can last the longest too.

Premenopause vs. Perimenopause

There is a stage in women’s lives that’s called premenopause but has nothing to directly with the different stages of menopause. Although they sound like they’re the same thing. Premenopause is marked by your first menstrual cycle, when women get their first period and lasts until they reach perimenopause. Whereas perimenopause is the first step in menopause, when female sexual hormones start to decrease and your body starts functioning differently and you start experiencing some of the symptoms of perimenopause.

What are the symptoms of Perimenopause?

Every woman is different, our bodies function differently, our hormones react differently. Just like the different symptoms women can experience during their period, the symptoms of perimenopause can vary from woman to woman. However, there are some symptoms that are quite common:

  • Irregular period
  • Hot flashes
  • Disrupted sleep
  • Mood changes
  • Vaginal and bladder problems
  • Changes in sexual function
  • Changes to skin, hair and weight

During perimenopause, oestrogen levels fluctuate and drop. The way the body reacts to this hormone rollercoaster results in the vast range of symptoms that can be experienced.. Although female wellness is often seen as a cycle, let’s remember that every woman is different and experiences those stages differently.

The symptoms and the body’s reaction are very individual and two women will never experience those stages the same way. Hormone levels already fluctuate in our 20s and 30s and this can have a great impact on how menopause is experienced.

How can I alleviate the symptoms perimenopause?

When looking up these symptoms, you may be told that they are associated with menopause, without being told  which stage they may happen. Doctors can prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) , to balance the levels of oestrogen the body isn’t producing anymore, as well as other medicines, depending on your needs.

But, there is a supplement that women can take that can alleviate the symptoms of perimenopause and nourish the body with just what it needs at this lifestage.
