CBD 101: The difference between Hemp and Marijuana

So many terms to describe one plant, yet they all mean something different. With the rise of CBD in the UK, we’re hearing so many different words and it’s making choosing a CBD product harder and more complicated than it should be. The cannabis world requires its own dictionary and glossary because there are so many terms hiding behind that one and since CBD in the UK so new, we’ll only cover the basics, for now, to make sure you can read a CBD label correctly.

Knowing the words revolving around CBD is important to make sure you choose the best CBD products

CBD is one of the most exciting trends of 2019 but also one of the most confusing. We use a lot of specific terms but the problem is that most of us have no idea what CBD is or how it is made in the first place. So let’s break this down together.

The Difference Between CBD and THC

Cannabis is the overall term we use to talk about this plant or leaf that we all know so well. Cannabis and weed are a reference to the plant but that’s when it becomes complicated (yes, already). Because there’s not only one type of cannabis plant.

Marijuana is definitely a word you’ve heard before and would probably define it as “weed”. Like the other cannabis plants, marijuana is packed with cannabinoids but is mainly famous for its high THC content. That’s the plant people smoke when they smoke weed.

Hemp is another cannabis plant. When you buy a CBD product, high chances are that it comes from hemp. Hemp is a specific type of cannabis, the type that contains a high amount of CBD, and a low amount of THC (we’ll cover those acronyms in a bit). Even though CBD hasn’t been making noise for too long, you probably have heard of hemp. Hemp is a plant that has been around for centuries, with hemp bags or hemp clothes. It is not a new world in the wellness world.

What are Cannabinoids?

Bare with us, we’re getting a bit technical here. This one may seem like a complicated word but you actually know two of them: THC and CBD. Cannabinoids are the active compounds in the cannabis plant, and the ones that are extracted to create all these products.

CBD and THC are precisely phytocannabinoids, because they are in the plant. Our bodies have endocannabinoids, which interact with the CBD.

What is CBD?

Everyone talks about CBD but many people don’t actually know what it is. CBD, stands for cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid, which means that it’s an active compound found in the cannabis plant and in higher content in the hemp plant.

CBD has been a buzzword in the health and wellness world for the past year, with people wanting to switch to more plant-based foods and alternatives, it has been the revelation of the past year.

CBD is most known and loved for its calming and relaxing properties.

What is THC?

THC was up until now the most famous cannabinoid on earth, it’s the component that makes you high. None of our products contain THC since products that contain any trace of THC is illegal in the UK.

Full Spectrum vs Isolate vs Broad Spectrum CBD UK TheDrug.Store

The difference between Full-spectrum and broad-spectrum

When you read a CBD label, these words may come up: full-spectrum CBD, broad-spectrum CBD or isolate CBD. And you might be wondering: what’s the difference, so let’s break it down.

With a full-spectrum CBD product, all the cannabinoids from the plant (THC, CBD and more) will be found in the products. Because they are hemp-extracted, the THC content is not large enough that you won’t feel high but you will still have traces of THC in your body. We don’t sell any full-spectrum products because any products that contain traces of THC are illegal in the UK.

Broad-spectrum CBD is basically like full-spectrum with no THC in them. Broad-spectrum products are great because even though CBD is the strongest cannabinoid in those products, there are other ones that will support the effect of the CBD. Most people you who like CBD are those who love plant-based products.

There’s something people call the entourage effect that enhances the effects of the CBD in the products. Think of it as adding multiple spices to a dish because they will complement each other. There’s no actual evidence that the entourage effect exists or works but people say that taking broad-spectrum oils seems to have more effect.
