5 Tips to Destress during This Time of the Year

2022... Let's start it right

December and the Holiday season can bring a lot of joy and make people happy but it can also be a stressful time. Between figuring out gifts and the situation being a lot different this year, there’s a lot on many peoples mind and. On top of that, it’s winter and the amount of daylight (or the lack of) can definitely affect the way we feel. 

A few tips we have to relax and be less stressed during this time: 

1. Unplug 

    Whether it’s for a few hours, a whole day or a full weekend, try to unplug from your phone, notifications and anything else that can make you feel busy. We're in this generation where technology guides our daily life, especially if your phone is your work instrument. Put your phone in do not disturb, even for a few hours and don't allow your phone to dictate when to pick it up or look at it.

    It can be stressful to hear the phone buzz or hear a notification noise every minute or so, so turning it off will teach you to be less dependant of it. It sounds a bit hard and if you do it for the first time, you probably won't resist for long but try it for yourself and see the difference it makes in the way you feel! 

    2. Get outside 

    The cold (and most likely wet) weather might be quite discouraging, but going for a walk or a run, even for 10-15 minutes can make a big difference in your day. Especially if you're working from home, make it a priority to go out of your element a little bit, breathe some fresh air and break your routine. That will also give you the opportunity to get some steps in and get the blood flowing, wake up your body and get out of a slump. 

    Stop for a coffee somewhere or grab some quick lunch. When we spend our days doing the exact same things over and over again, we can easily get in a rut and hit a wall.

    3. Listen to your favourite music

    Something wrong? Dance it out. This seems super cheesy and right out of a film, but turning the music up (or putting your headphones on if you have neighbours) and having a dance party to yourself can make a massive difference in your mood. Create a playlist with your favourite tunes, it's also the season to listen to Christmas music, so go for it that's your thing. Music can really turn a day upside down, even if you're working, put on some lofi or something that uplift you. 

    4. Take a moment to do nothing 

    This is for all the workaholics out there! Make sure you take a break once in a while. In the culture of hustle and bustle, it’s easy to get caught up in what you’re doing and forget to take a moment to breathe. Make sure you take a break from work, whether it’s for half an hour during the day or taking a day off.

    Not only will taking a break will give you a moment to breathe and to take your mind off things, but you'll also come back with a clearer mind, which will ultimately make you more productivity.  

    5. Stay in touch with others 

    Having some quiet time to yourself is really important, but it's also important to stay in touch with other people. We were made to be social beings, even the most introverted people need to have someone to talk to and laugh with. Especially in the age of social distancing and isolation, it's more important than ever to make sure we keep in touch with friends, family and other people who matter to us.

    In the end, we're all kind of in the same boat and having more interactions with one another can only make us all feel better.
